The 8th of October is the http://www.iapb.org/wsd15" World Sight Day, and this year's call for action is 'eye care for all'. The group of Diabetes and Metabolism at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), led by Dr. Rafael Simó, supports this global annual event to focus attention worldwide on vision impairment and blindness.Dr. Simó has coordinated since 2012 the European project http://eurocondor.eu/about" EUROCONDOR, which aims at improving the lives of millions of patients living with diabetes, by preventing the development of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness among the working-age population in developed countries. In a couple of weeks, he expects that will finish a multicenter clinical trial in which 450 patients with type 2 diabetes have participated. The goal of the clinical trial is to test the efficacy and the safety of several treatments for the early stages of the disease. The follow-up of the study has been useful to raise awareness, among the participants of the study, of the importance of eye care.Diabetic retinopathy is an eye complication that can occur in people with diabetes, especially in those who don't follow a good control of the disease. It is estimated that the prevalence is close to the 30% of the population with diabetes.EUROCONDOR is a collaborative project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. The consortium includes 17 partners across Europe and is composed of specialists in endocrinology, ophthalmology, a biotech and the European federation of patients with diabetes.
