VHIR leads project grants for health research from Instituto de Salud Carlos III

Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) is the center associated with Spanish hospitals which received more grants from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII ) for the fourth quarter of 2010. The 31 projects, totaling the amount financed of 3,919,909.50 euros, from 23 different research groups, demonstrate the wide variety of quality proposals approved.The area with most funded projects (eleven) is neurosciences, three of which belong to the group of neurovascular diseases and in particular to the research in stroke. In this same area are also included two awarded to the group of clinical neuroimmunología about multiple sclerosis. The group of bioengineering, orthopedic and pediatric surgery has also approved three projects, all related to clinical applications using animal models. They were also financed two projects in nephrology research group. Groups of liver diseases and systemic diseases have two projects each. The first related to hepatitis C virus and episodic hepatic encephalopathy, and the latter with lupus and anaphylaxis. There are also projects approved in radiation oncology, general surgery, diabetes and metabolism, circulatory disease, digestive physiology and pathophysiology, pneumology, maternal and fetal medicine, clinical pharmacology and cell and gene therapy.ISCIII of the Ministry of Education and Science has funded 70.3 million euros to finance research projects in health. One third of this amount, 23.8 million euros, are directed to research projects of centers from Catalonia, that leads, with a total of 220 projects selected for grant aid, funding distributed by ISCIII.
