The students of the Master's Degree in Science and Welfare of the Animal of Laboratory of the UAB will do the practices in the facilities of the VHIR.

The Experimental Surgery Unit (ESU) and the Pre-Clinical Image Platform (PIP) of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute's Lab Animal service (VHIR) will host several practical classes of the module "Reduction and Refinement in Experimental Design and Methodology," within the http://www.uab.es/servlet/Satellite/master-en-ciencia-y-bienestar-del-animal-de-laboratorio/datos-basicos-1206597472083.html/param1-2264_es/param2-2012/" Master in Science and Welfare of the Laboratory Animal of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).Veterinarians Marielle Esteves and Juan Antonio Cámara will coordinate this collaboration and will give theoretical classes on imaging techniques in experimental animals, and practices on ultrasound-guided vascular accesses in large animals, optical imaging techniques, microCT and ultrasound in rodents. For this they will count with the participation of the Dr. Anna Server Salvà, researcher of the VHIR Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering research group, Dr. César Galo García Fontecha, head of the research group on Reconstructive Surgery of the Locomotive Apparatus and Marcos Poncelas, from Hypra. They will also have Anna Pujol, from the animal experimentation service of the VHIR.The purpose of these practices is to show students various imaging techniques, such as vascular access, and begin their training in this field. The final objective of this Master Module is to perfect ("refine") the experimental management of laboratory animals, which has a direct impact on animal welfare and the quality of the studies. The ESU has a large animal housing area and 3 operating rooms (one for rabbits and two for pigs and sheep). All of them are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment (inhalational anaesthesia equipment, cardiovascular, respiratory and electroencephalographic BIS monitorization systems, C-scopes arches, endoscopes, fiberoptic endoscopes, echographs ...) required for a wide variety of experimental procedures. Vall d'Hebron Campus researchers and doctors use these facilities for the development of translational research projects in the surgical field, and for training courses in general and specific techniques of high sophistication, such as endoscopic surgery techniques or interventional radiology. The PIP, located in the new facilities of the Vall d'Hebron Campus in the CELLEX Building, has its own rodent housing (mice and rats), as well as an optical imaging equipment and a microCT. Both equipments are specifically designed for use in small laboratory animals. The platform serves the Vall d'Hebron Campus (VHIR and VHIO), as well as researchers from centres outside the campus. In addition, it is in the process of enabling a radioactive licensed zone to install a microPET computer. This specialization Master is the only one that is taught in Spain to obtain the title of Animal Welfare Adviser, required for animal managers, and also has the accreditation of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA). At European level, there are only two master's programs with this accreditation, which is therefore a great attraction for professionals in this area, both nationally and internationally. For the practical sessions, we have the collaboration of imaging teams from Mindray, CVM and Esaote. In addition to this master's degree, VHIR also teaches the classes for the Molecular Pathology module of the http://www.uab.es/servlet/Satellite?cid=1096480309770&pagename=UAB/Page/TemplatePageDetallEstudisPOP¶m1=1096480140580" Official Master's Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine of the UAB and the http://www.vhir.org/master/cast/index.html" Master's Degree in Biomedical and Translational Research of the VHIR.
