Doctors from Vall d’Hebron use Skype since 2008 to share information with professionals from Cubal

Dr. Israel Molina, associate doctor from the Infectious Diseases Service at Vall d'Hebron, leads a project on telemedicine with professionals from "http://hospitalnsdelapaz.blogspot.com.es/" "http://hospitalnsdelapaz.blogspot.com.es/" Hospital Nossa Senhora da Paz de Cubal, located in the central-west of Angola. The initiative marks 5 years and it is consolidated as an information sharing platform between both centers. The project started after the first trip of Dr. Molina to this private center which is integrated to the public health network of the country and attends nearly 20,000 people every year from the region of Cubal. After first diagnosing needs of the hospital regarding pathology, he started to contact African professionals via Skype twice a month. "I wanted to give them the opportunity to share their cases with us and all the information that here, at Vall d’Hebron, doctors use to in case of doubt or just to reaffirm our decision. There, they have nobody to do this", explains Dr. Molina. During these pst 5 years, professionals from both hospitals have shared words, pictures and diagnostic tests. All this data not only has been useful for Angolan to clarify doubts and to expand their training, but also for doctors and researchers from Vall d’Hebron to expand their knowledge in diseases which are unusual here, such as measles, yellow fever and malaria. This project has also been helpful for Dr. Molina to demonstrate that it is possible to practice medicine with few resources: "we have gone back to the basis of medicine: the physical examination and the interrogation. Sometimes we are so blind with the wide range of complementary tests, that we forget how to practice medicine with fewer resources. In that sense, this project has been useful for learning mechanisms for managing all the resources that we have". Besides this project on telemedicine, VHIR researchers have in Angola several studies on the resistance to tuberculosis, the epidemiology of Schistosomiasis, and the relationship between child mortality and malaria. In addition, last June, "http://www.vhir.org/salapremsa/noticies/noticies_detall.asp?any=2013&num=101&mv1=5&mv2=3&Idioma=ca&titol=Investigadors%20i%20professionals" "http://www.vhir.org/salapremsa/noticies/noticies_detall.asp?any=2013&num=101&mv1=5&mv2=3&Idioma=ca&titol=Investigadors%20i%20professionals" doctors and researchers from Vall d’Hebron raised 11,000 euros to buy an ultrasound machine which is already working in the Angolan hospital.
