More than thirty scientists faced the challenges of cardiac regeneration at CosmoCaixa

“The goal of regenerative cardiology is the preservation and regeneration of the structure and function of the myocardium”. With this premise started the first session of 'Unsolved Problems in Heart Repair'. An international meeting led by Dr. Manuel Galiñanes, head of the Reparative Therapy of the Heart group at VHIR, and organized by Biocat in the B·Debate framework with the collaboration of VHIR and ‘la Caixa’ Foundation.During three days, VHIR’s scientists and international experts in ischemic heart disease were in Barcelona to share their experiences and try to consensus about the protocols which should be followed and the information which should be collected in laboratory and animal experiments before a given cell treatment is tested in humans.Among the questions, they debate what should be the goal of cell teraphy, which is the dose and composition of the autologous and allogeneic cell therapy product, what is the minimal and optimal set of preclinical information required before the start of clinical trials, or what are the ethical implications of cell terapy.Besides Dr. Galiñanes, representing VHIR also attended the debate Dra. Anna Meseguer, director’s assistant in basic research, Dr. Jordi Barquinero, head of the Cell and Gene Therapy group and Dr. David García Dorado, head of the Cardiocirculatory Pathology group. In de discussion also participated of experts like Dominique Charron, head of the Dep. of Hemathology, Inmmunology and Therapeutic Target and CIB at Hospital Saint Louis in Paris, Bernardo Nadal-Ginard, professor in the Dep. of Sport and Sciences and Medicine at John Moores Liverpool University, and Asterios Tsiftsoglou, professor of Pharmacology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
