15/03/2012 VHIR's researchers help to reproduce the loss of neurons that causes Parkinson disease 15/03/2012 Dr. Miquel Vila and Dr. Iria Carballo-Carbajal, chief and member respectively of the neurodegenerative diseases group at Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) have participated in a study coordinated by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and published in EMBO Molecular Medicine in which have been generated in vitro dopaminergic neurons (those who degenerate into Parkinson) from skin cells of patients with this disease. These cells reproduce to cellular level some pathological aspects of the disease and they might be used as screening platform of new drugs for Parkinson, as well as to select patients to apply to them in an individualized way certain therapies. Dr. Carballo-Carbajal has done great part of the phenotypic characterization of these cells.
