The study "http://www.gastrojournal.org/article/S0016-5085(09)00173-5/abstract" "http://www.gastrojournal.org/article/S0016-5085(09)00173-5/abstract" 'Abdominal Distention Results from Caudo-ventral Redistribution of Contents', published in 2009, concluded with an unexpected result: abdominal distention is caused by an increase in intra-abdominal volume or abdomino-phrenic displacement and ventro-caudal redistribution of contents. “This finding, which was contrary to our initial hypothesis, was really surprising”, explains Dr. Azpiroz, after checking in patients that their gas volume in the gut and the total volume of viscera in their abdomen cavity presented a small increase that by itself didn’t justify distention. VHIR’s researcher highlights this study because it was “a turning point of this research line in which we had been working for many years with a very laborious programme”, as well as it became the first corroboration concerning the muscle activity. After this observation, researchers demonstrated which the trigger mechanisms of this distention are, and investigated alternative therapies applying bio feedback techniques to correct the abdominal muscle activity.
