The newspaper La Vanguardia organizes for the sixth time the Vanguardia de la Ciencia award. On this occasion we are proud to have among the finalists Dr. Joan Seoane, a researcher of the Vall d'hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), for his discovery "lumbar puncture against brain tumours", presented in Nature Communications. Dr. Seoane and his team have found a possible solution to improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors: perform a lumbar puncture and analyze if the cerebrospinal fluid contains DNA of tumor cells from the brain. This is a result of the multidisciplionary collaboration of various services from the Vall d'hebron Campus. As for the Medical Oncology Department, the following VHIO researchers took part: Dr. Javier Cortés, Dr. Enriqueta Felip, Dr. Josep Tabernero, Dr. Jordi Rodón and Dr. Juan Carlos. In the field of Neurosurgery, the following researchers from the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) took part: Dr. Joan Sahuquillo and Dr. Francisco Martínez-Ricarte, and from the Pathology Service, Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Dr. Elena Martínez-Saez and Dr. Vicente Peg, also researchers of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR). I is noteworthy the remarkable technology that has been used, which has been key in the study. In particular, the genomic sequencing of new generation with the contribution of Dr. Ana Vivancos and VHIO, and the bioinformatics support of the Dr. Xavier de la Cruz group from VHIR.

The sum of the efforts has made this discovery possible, showing that one of the ways to move forward in the fight against cancer is thanks to the joint work from different complementary approaches. This is an example of how multidisciplinary collaboration can achieve to bring science to the reality of the patient.
