Webinar on Central Sensitization Syndrome in the post-COVID-19 era from Spain

Five experts have addressed different topics of current advances in biomedical and clinical research of CFS/ME, Fibromyalgia and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in the post-COVID-19 era.

The Chronic Fatigue Working Group from the Central Sensitization Syndrome Unit (CSSU) at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, led by Dr. Jose Alegre and Dr. Jesus Castro, coinciding with the International Awareness Day for these illnesses (May 12), together with the Catalonia Association of Patients with Central Sensitization Syndromes (ACAF- http://www.fibromialgia.cat www.fibromialgia.cat), has organized a mini-symposium (webinar) online entitled "Central Sensitization Syndromes in the post-COVID-19 era". The webinar joined to five expert speakers, addressed different topics of current advances in the biomedical research on CFS/ME, Fibromyalgia and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and the potential effects of COVID-19 after the pandemic from Spain.Firstly, Dr. José Alegre, addressed post-viral fatigue syndrome, which has been studied in relation to other previous coronavirus outbreaks (such as SARS and MERS in CFS/ME), and highlighted the importance that an epidemiological and clinical survey of surviving COVID-19 patients. Likewise, he emphasized that CFS/ME patients could show a worsening of their symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection with a slower recovery times. Prof. Elisa Oltra, from the Valencia Catholic University explained the impact and significance of activation of human endogenous retroviruses in patients with Fibromyalgia and CFS/ME and how this aberrant process could relate to viral infections, SARS-CoV-2 included. Dr. Castro, from the Chronic Fatigue Research Group at VHIR, presented his latest results on the study of associations between patient's circadian rhythm "biological clock" and autonomic dysfunction in CFS/ME. The physiotherapist and psychologist at the CSSU, Mayte Serrat spoke about the importance of multi-component treatments (education in pain neuroscience, therapeutic and personalized physical exercise, and relaxation techniques) for patients with fibromyalgia. Finally, Dr. Joaquim Fernandez Solà, from the CSSU at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, talked about the impact that COVID-19 could have in patients suffering from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.The mini-symposium was an absolute success, with unexpected numerous participation, and highly commented on social media networks.
