Do you know why is so healthy to eat food containing probiotics? Why do we find inflammatory diseases in the bowel? And why falling in love is so often accompanied by butterflies in the stomach? All these questions and many others were answered by researchers from the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Digestive Tract group last week at the 14th edition of the http://agenda.obrasocial.lacaixa.es/ca/-/14a-feria-recerca-en-directe" Fira Recerca en Directe, located at the Cosmocaixa museum.VHIR researchers designed a fun quiz which explains that the bowel is not only related to the digestion. In a 10-minutes workshop, they explained the functions of the bowel, and how different cell types and epitheliums are combined to carry out the digestion effectively. However, when any of these mechanisms fail, diseases such as the irritable bowel syndrome, the eosinophilic esophagitis or inflammatory digestive diseases appear. The Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Digestive Tract group is a multidisciplinary team composed by physicians, nurses and scientists from different fields (Biology, Pharmacy, Biochemistry and Biomedicine). For 20 years, they are doing research with the aim to unveil the origin and causes of digestive diseases in order to find a cure. With this objective, they carry out basic and clinical research studies, and work in projects which include experimentation with animal models. The Fira, organized by the Parc Científic de Barcelona, was addressed to high school students, and was open for everyone visiting Cosmocaixa on Abril 9th. Last year, over 1.500 people visited this activity. Twitter LinkedIn Facebook Whatsapp
