Maite Molins is 18, and just begun her university studies in Chemical Engineering at IQS. But before she started classes, she made a one-week internship at the laboratory of Cardiology at VHIR, under the supervision of Dr. Marisol Ruiz Meana.Maite had the opportunity to enjoy the internship thanks to the VHIR award she won in the http://magmarecerca.org/" Exporecerca Jove 2016. In the laboratory, the student has been devoted to observe in detail the work of researchers, and to do some procedures such as thawing cells and make them grow. According to Maite, in the laboratory of Cardiology "there is a very good atmosphere, all investigators have been very close". After passing through VHIR, and learning new concepts and procedures, she has expressed her desire to pursue research because it is a branch that attracts her "more than ever".Maite participated in the Exporecerca Jove contest, a sample of research studies to young people between 12 and 30 years, with her senior year high school work: Design of a polymeric replica of the human aortic arch for in vitro experimentation. The research aimed to create a replica of the arch of the aorta to use as part of an alternative treatment for aortic aneurysms, affecting between 2 and 7% of men over 65 years old. After testing different materials, Maite found the solution by creating a mold built by a 3D printer and coated with pork and lamb tripe. A part from the VHIR award, the study also won two awards, the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera Special Award and Ciencia en Acción Award. Thanks to these awards, Maite was able to participate in the Intel ISEF science fair, held in Phoenix, in the United States, and this week she has attended the Ciencia en Acción fair, in Algeciras.
