14/05/2019 Xavi Vallès achieves almost € 37,000 for research in pediatric tumors of the nervous system 14/05/2019 The money raised will be allocated to research lines for new therapies for pediatric tumors of the nervous system. Xavi Vallès is an oncologic patient who started the project " De l'hospital a la catedral " to obtain funds for pediatric tumor therapy research in the nervous system. It has achieved 36,955.75 euros that today has been delivered to the VHIR. As he explains himself, "this project was born while I was treated with chemotherapy. I saw that the research in children's oncology needs help. " For this reason, Xavi Vallès launched a crowfunding initiative in his project " http://delhospitalalacatedral.com/ca/front-page-cat/ De l'hospital a la catedral", with which he has achieved 36,955.75 euros that will be destined for the Translational Research in Child and Adolescent Cancer of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), which has a line of research to develop new therapies for pediatric tumors of the nervous system. This group is led by Dr. Josep Sánchez de Toledo Codina and the principal investigators are Dr. Soledad Gallego, who is also head of the Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Hematology Department of Vall d'Hebron, the Dr. Josep Roma, and Dr. Miquel Segura. As Xavi Vallès adds, "I have organized various events, such as raffles, meetings to climb mountains, solidarity paellas... to raise awareness among people of the importance of contributing financially to research in childhood cancer."The money earned by Xavi Vallès will contribute to financing the project, which aims to characterize existing cell lines and establish models that imitate childhood cancers in mice, and the evaluation of new therapies, such as those based on lipid agents. Specifically, the group wants to create orthotopic mouse models from cell lines derived from the patient. Thanks to this type of murine models, the tumor cells of the patient are implanted in mice, in the same organ or anatomical zone of the original tumor. In this way, it is possible to test possible treatments in the mice, rather than in the patient, avoiding their exposure to ineffective therapies. As part of his project " De l'hospital a la catedral ", Xavi Vallès wanted to pedal from Vall d'Hebron Hospital to the Cathedral of Santiago by bicycle. "I wanted to make the Camino de Santiago on a bicycle and start on May 16th, but, unfortunately, I have to postpone this project for health reasons." A break that Xavi Vallès hopes it will be as short as possible to resume this challenge, but he continues to be active with the solidarity project. Twitter LinkedIn Facebook Whatsapp
