Area of Human Resources and Legal Department

The area of Human Resources and Legal Department comprises three units: the Employment Relations Unit, the Professional Development Unit and the Legal Unit. The coordination of these allows the following:

  • A comprehensive management of all Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) personnel.
  • Assessment of any legal matters that may affect the HUVH Research Institute Foundation (FIR-HUVH).

Employment Relations Unit

The Employment Relations Unit manages the personnel on the VHIR workforce, as well as a large group of people who, whether they have an employment contract with FIR-HUVH or not, form part of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute Barcelona Hospital Campus and are very closely tied to research.

The Unit’s main tasks are:

  • Managing the contracting and monitoring of new personnel, as well as the amendments and changes to the contractual situation and those related with the public bodies such as the General Treasury of the Social Security, the National Institute for Social Security, and the Job Centre of the Generalitat (OTG), the Tax Administration and the Occupational Health Mutual Insurance entities.
  • Facilitating access to the facilities and buildings, identification cards and Intranet access (days off, holidays, sick leave).
  • Overseeing the payment of salaries and the settlement of corresponding taxes (personal income tax and social security contributions) on a monthly basis.
  • Providing advice on social, employment and immigration matters to heads of department and researchers that require it.
  • Together with the Professional Development Unit, overseeing the Flexible Remuneration Plan through which personnel may receive tax deductions for services such as crèche, lunch vouchers or transport.

The VHIR has a Joint Occupational Health and Safety Service. The Occupational Health and Safety Basic Units (UBP) forms part of this service and its function is to assess and ensure the health and safety of all the workplaces, in accordance with the provisions set out by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. It is formed by specialists from four disciplines and divided into the following occupational risks: 

  • Safety in the workplace
  • Industrial hygiene
  • Ergonomics
  • Psychosociology

In the health area, nursing staff monitor the health of VHIR personnel and participate in the prevention of professional illnesses and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

Professional Development Unit

The aim of the Professional Development Unit is to accompany VHIR personnel throughout their entire professional career at the institution. Its main functions are:

  • Recruitment and selection of personnel. Whenever required, it provides support to the heads of department and researchers in managing job offers, their publication on portals and the performance of selection tests and interviews.
  • Together with the Employment Relations Unit, it oversees the welcome process for new personnel joining the VHIR They monitor all new personnel at the institution and ensure they have the basic tools and knowledge for integration.
  • Design and implementation of professional development and training initiatives to improve and update the knowledge of all the personnel and contribute to their personal and professional growth.
  • Overseeing aspects relating to policies and processes that integrate gender diversity and equal treatment and opportunities between women and men at the VHIR.
