Research lines

Sepsis and Septic shock

The Sepsis and Septic Shock line includes aspects of pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. The line aims to investigate the pathophysiology of the systemic inflammatory response induced by infection, the study of sepsis biomarkers, analysis of factors related to the development of multi-organ dysfunction and the prognosis of severe sepsis, development of early prediction of mortality from severe sepsis, new treatments and the development of precision medicine in the treatment of sepsis and septic shock. From this line, SODIR has created and developed the Sepsis Bank of the HUVH Biobank, which is part of the scientific-technical services of the VHIR. It belongs to the National Biobank Network Platform of the Carlos III Health Institute and is one of the three sepsis banks that exist worldwide. The Sepsis Bank, directed by Dr. J.C.Ruiz-Rodríguez and Dr. J.J.González (Microbiology Department) was financed thanks to the European project “Scalable, point-of-care and label free microarray platform for rapid detection of Sepsis ( RAIS)” (H2020-ICT-2014-1, Grant Agreement no. 644956) The maintenance and expansion of the sepsis bank as a tool to support research and knowledge transfer interventions through the Code are also strategic objectives of the line.  The Sepsis Bank is a structure that allows the processing and storage of blood, plasma and serum samples from the donation of patients with activation of the HUVH In-Hospital Sepsis Code that are available for biomedical research by the national and international scientific community. The opportunity to share blood samples from patients with sepsis is an extraordinary opportunity to facilitate and promote internal and external biomedical research in our center. In fact, the Sepsis Bank is participating in various national and international projects. The line has 6 theses in progress (Dr. J. Caballero, Dr. E. Papiol, Dr. J. Baldira, Dr. A. Ruiz, Dr. L. Chiscano and Dr. C. Marrero).

Cardiac arrest and Life Suport

The objective of research line of cardiac arrest and life support is to improve the knowledge about the inhospital cardiac arrest and to study more effective interventions during cardiac arrest and postresuscitation care that improve survival and life quality of the survived patients. SODIR also has a special interest in to identify the precipitating factors of the inhospital cardiac arrest and pericardiac arrest situations.

Critically ill patient monitoring

The research line in  critically ill patient monitoring, led by Dr.J.C.Ruiz, has as objectives the research in the application of echocardiography and other non-invasive or minimally invasive monitoring systems in the study of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the hemodynamic and cardiac dysfunction of the critical patient, and the study of microcirculation and its involvement in the pathophysiology of severe sepsis with multiorgan dysfunction.
