One more year, the Barcelona PID Foundation, in collaboration with the Catalan Association of Primary Immune Deficits (ACADIP), has made a new donation of euros46,450 to promote the project "I have a PID, I am not alone". The project, developed by the research group on Infection in Immunocompromised Pediatric Patients at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), and led by Dr. Pere Soler, has been supported by https://fundacionlacaixa.org/ "la Caixa" Foundation since 2015.The initiative "I have a PID, I am not alone" promotes research in the field of psychological support for pediatric patients with a primary immunodeficiency (PID) and their families. It is coordinated by the psychologist Laura López Seguer, who manages all the activities included in the project. "We highly value the collaboration with BCN-PID Foundation and ACADIP as it makes it possible for us to incorporate professionals like Laura López to our team to promote research projects", says Dr. Pere Soler, head of the research group on Infection in Immunocompromised Pediatric Patients at the VHIR.The project focuses on research in the psychological support of these patients but also, as stated by Montse Giménez, manager of the VHIR, "the initiative goes beyond research, since in this case patients and their families are accompanied to improve their care". The objectives of the project are:- Promote comprehensive care for pediatric patients with PID to improve their quality of life.- Offer global attention through a multidisciplinary team.- Plan a set of interventions aimed at facilitating adaptation to the hospital environment, understanding their illness and sharing experiences with peers.- Intervene on the most significant context of the pediatric patient: family and school.Carlota Villar, Vice-president of BCN-PID Foundation, assures that "we want to continue adding value to the project, being part of the important work that is done in Vall d'Hebron". For her part, Esther Ferrer, secretary of ACADIP, says "we totally believe in this project and we think that psychological support is very important for these patients and their families". BCN-PID Foundation and ACADIP: two associations to support people with primary immunodeficienciesBCN-PID Foundation is an entity whose main objectives are to promote excellence in the knowledge, study, research and dissemination of primary immunodeficiencies and complications of infectious origin that affected pediatric patients may have, as well as excellence in their integral care to improve their quality of life.ACADIP is an association that groups and supports people diagnosed with any type of primary immunodeficiency and their families in Catalonia, and one of its aims is to work and collaborate with the scientific community in the field of research to achieve a higher quality of life. Primary immunodeficienciesPIDs are chronic minority diseases resulting from a genetic defect that alters the different mechanisms involved in the immune response, which makes the patient susceptible to allergies, autoimmune diseases, neoplasms and recurrent and/or serious infections that, if not treated in an appropriate way, they can leave sequalae for life or have fatal consequences. Thus, in many cases they lead to medical controls and hospital treatments that, in addition to the physical affection, have a psychological and social effect on the patient and their families. These diseases globally affect one in every 2,000 individuals, both pediatric and adult patients.
