The aim of the meeting was to bring together technology and community, analyzing the problems it brings up

The meeting “The impact of genomics in translational medicine: present view”, held last Monday October 13 in the Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR), brought together a group of experts in the application of genomic techniques in biomedicine with two main objectives: bring these techniques closes to our community, and analyzing how they apply and the problems said application bring. The first speaker, Dr. Joaquín Dopazo, heaf of the group of Computational Genomics at the Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe ( "http://www.cipf.es/" CIPF), explained to the researchers of the institute how they can use different sequencing techniques in order to identify pathological variables in the genome of the patients. After his speech, Dr. Ivo Gut, director of the "http://www.pcb.ub.edu/homePCB/live/ct/p3217.asp" Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico, approached some international projects in which genomic information is key for the better understanding of rare diseases and cancer. The third speaker, Dr. Manel Esteller, director of the Epigenetic and Biology of Cancer program at "http://www.idibell.cat/" IDIBELL, recalled that the genetic effects are just one small part of the molecular causes of the disease, and that massive epigenetic analysis can have an important diagnostic value. Finally, Dr. Xavier de la Cruz, head of the "http://www.vhir.org/larecerca/grupsrecerca/ca_grups_objectius.asp?Idioma=en&mv1=2&mv2=1&mh1=2&mh2=1&mh3=1&mh4=0&ms=0&area=4&grup=13&menu=1" Translational Bioinformatics research group at VHIR, presented the techniques for the identification of pathological mutations to the sequencing problems, its limits and possibilities of improvement. On the round table, the participation of Drs. Eduardo Tizzano, Elena García-Arumí, Francina Munell and Orland Díez, allowed to compare and contrast the limits present on genomic techniques in diagnostic problems, and point possible ways of improvement. The meeting is part of the celebrations of VHIR’s 20th anniversary and was organized by Dr. Xavier de la Cruz, Dr. Elena García-Arumí and the Communication Unit at VHIR.
