Today, 29th of February is the Rare Diseases Day. The rare diseases platform, that have organized the activities of this day in Catalonia, has awarded the Rare Diseases Unit, created recently at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital. This unit, led by Dr. Eduardo Tizzano, director of the Clinical Genetics Area and head of the Genetics Medicine group at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), was designed with the aim to develop a new model of patient care for those who suffer any of the over 7,000 pathologies considered as 'rare' (with less than 5 cases out of 10,000 people).The fight against rare diseases is one of VHIR's pillars, where nearly 200 of these diseases are investigated, from 26 different clinical areas.
