Andrea Guala

Andrea Guala obtained a bachelor and a master degree in mechanical engineering at Polytechnic of Milan and Turin, respectively, and, in 2015, a Ph.D. at the Polytechnic of Turin. In 2016 he joined the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) in Barcelona, where he was awarded (i) the Marie Curie COFUND post-doctoral fellowship (2016), (ii) the Juan de la Cierva (2019, 3rd best evaluated over 221 applicants), (iii) the Sara Borrell (2019, 4th best evaluated over +250 applicants), (iv) the “la Caixa” Junior Leader (2022), and (v) the R3 certification as “Established Researcher” from the Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation (100/100 evaluation). Andrea’s post-doctoral period officially ended in 2025, when, after the award of Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) tenure track call and the Miguel Servet contract, he obtained a permanent position as senior researcher at VHIR. Andrea now leads a team composed of 6 early career researchers and one post-doc, all mostly dedicated to medical image analysis, artificial intelligence and big data in cardiology and cardiovascular diseases. As per February 2026, Andrea authored 83 papers in peer-reviewed journals, being 1st author in 25 papers (31%), last author in 7 (9%) and corresponding author in 22 (27%). Among the papers in which he signs as main author (first, last, or corresponding), some were published in very high-impact journals, such as Circulation (IF 38.7, all IF from the JCR2024), the European Heart Journal (IF 35.7), the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (IF 22.3) and JACC cardiovascular imaging (IF 15.2, 3 papers). According to Google Scholar (scholar.google.com), Andrea has an H-index of 30, i10 index of 56 and his works collected a total of 3303 citations. By participating, most often representing VHIR, in 4 Horizon Europe projects, while being principal investigator in projects funded via the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and la Caixa Foundation, Andrea attracted substantial research funding.

A study led by the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) demonstrates the causal role of air pollution in ventricular arrhythmias and identifies a possible therapeutic strategy based on antioxidants.

The grants, amounting to more than €533,000 for VHIR, will allow clinical duties to be partially released over three years to promote strategic research projects in obesity, respiratory diseases, aortic pathology and metabolic fatty liver disease.

Funding has been obtained for 43 projects under the calls for Health R&D&I Projects, Health Technology Development, and Independent Clinical Research
