Gabriela Guillén Burrieza

Pediatric surgeon specialized in oncologic surgery. Also participates in neonatal surgery and pediatric liver surgery. Coordinator of the Pediatric Vascular Anomalies Committee. Member, among other societies, of the Spanish Pediatric Oncology Surgery Group, the European Paediatric Soft Tissue Sarcoma Study Group and the European Paediatric Surgeons' Association. In the field of research, har main fields of interest are clinical research projects in pediatric oncology and personalized medicine. She is also clinical associate professor at the UAB and tutor of Paediatric Surgery Trainees.

Pediatric Surgery Trainee at Hospital Vall d'Hebron (2003-2008), being subsequently recruited as staff surgeon. Until 2016, she develops her professional activity in oncologic surgery and thoracic surgery. Since 2016, combines her work as a cancer surgeon with giving support to the neonatal and liver surgery units.
Among other awards she has received the best oral communication of a trainee prize at the XLV Congress of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Surgery (2006), 1st poster prize at the 8th European Congress of Paediatric Surgeons (2007), best oral communication prize in Urology at the XLVI Congress of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Surgery (2007), best oral communication prize at the XLVI Congress of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Surgery (2007) and the best poster prize at the 53º Congress of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Surgery (2014).

"Generation of a bank of surgical orthotopic PDX (patient-derived xenografts) models within the framework of a personalized medicine program in pediatric cancer" was the awarded work, of the Childhood Cancer and Hematological Diseases Group of VHIR.

A study, co-led by Vall d’Hebron, has analysed the evolution of clinical trials with children and adolescents with cancer over the last 15 years, with the aim of optimising efficacy and defining lines for further progress.

The research team has shown that inhibiting the TRIB3 protein slows the growth of rhabdomyosarcoma and improves survival in animal models.
