Joan Balcells Ramirez

I am a pediatrician dedicated to pediatric critical care, which is the field were I have developed my career. I have an especial interest in pediatric cardiorespiratory failure, congenital heart disease and heart or lung transplantation in children. My area of expertise is extracorporeal life support (ECMO and ventricular assist devices). I am the director of the Pediatric Critical Care Department since 2011 and of the Pediatric & Neonatal ECMO Program since 2007.

I am a pediatrician dedicated to pediatric critical care, which is the field were I have developed my career. I have an especial interest in pediatric cardiorespiratory failure, congenital heart disease and heart or lung transplantation in children. My area of expertise is extracorporeal life support (ECMO and ventricular assist devices). I am the director of the Pediatric Critical Care Department since 2011 and of the Pediatric & Neonatal ECMO Program since 2007.

I was born in Barcelona and I got my medical degree from the School of Medicine of Universidad de Navarra (1987-1993). I specialized in Pediatrics at Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron (1994-1997) and I took my doctoral degree (PhD) at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. I have worked at de Pediatric Critical Care Department of Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron since I finished my training in pediatrics.
I have worked as a consultant in pediatric critical care and in the pediatric and neonatal transport team. I am the director of the Pediatric & Neonatal ECMO program since 2007 and the director of the Pediatric Critical Care Department since 2011.
I am an associated professor of pediatrics at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2016.
My research interests focus on extracorporeal life support, anti-thrombotic therapy and severe infection in children.
