Experts from all over Europe gather in Vall d'Hebron, in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

On the past 16 and 17 of March took place the meeting of European experts in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME), EUROMENE (European Network on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). This event brought together in the facilities of the Vall d'Hebron Hospital from all over Europe the most expert researchers in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Leading the research in this field in the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) there is Dr. Jesús Castro and Dr. Jose Alegre, Coordinator of the Research Unit on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis within the http://www.vhir.org/portal1/grup-equip.asp?s=recerca&contentid=187043&t=Malalties%20Sist%E8miques Systemic Diseases, SICARDPATH research group. Among those attending the meeting there are pioneering researchers in this field like Dr. Carmen Scheibenbogen from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, or Elin Bolle Strand who leads the centre of CFS/ME Biobank at the University Hospital of Oslo, also researchers from other groups coming from United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy and Bulgaria, and http://www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/ca/CA15111" other countries. The aim of this European network is an harmonization and standardization of the protocols, diagnostic criteria, synchronization of databases, and promotion of new research projects. Until now, there was a great lack of coordination in the European research of this type of diseases.Strategies to tackle research in these syndromes for part of each group were put in common during the meeting, but also gave voice to the patients' Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis association of Catalonia (ACAF). Its coordinator, David Cifre, made a speech in which he stressed the needs of patients and he explained the strategies and objectives of the association as a model of Spanish well organized association. One of the more prominent conferences was the one carried out by professor Lenny Jason, of the University of Chicago. By means of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfKJK1mnJvM&feature=youtu.be video-conference, was discussed the current situation with regard to the diagnosis of CFS/ME in United States with respect to Europe. They also carried out workshops focused on finding suitable biomarkers for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, both genomic and biochemical. And finally, the new challenges and the goals that are wanted to be achieved in the short term were discussed, to be able to put them together at the next meeting of the network, that will be this UKY September in Serbia. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue SyndromeMyalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is the same disease, grouped under the name of Central Sensitisation Syndrome (CSS). This syndrome present symptoms such as central and peripheral fatigue and chronic pain in individuals of all ages.It is a disabling condition of unknown cause that affects up to 2% of the population in the country. For now, there is no test to confirm the diagnosis of the disease, but those tests performed ruled out other pathologies. In addition, it is a chronic disease that has no specific treatment yet.For all these reasons the disease is causing a significant social and economic burden that make such meetings necessary to allow steps forward to the improvement of the quality of life of those affected.
