Best oral communication award for nursing study on inflammatory bowel disease

Ester Navarro has been awarded during the GETEII's annual meeting for leading a multicenter study on the nursing telephone helpline

Ester Navarro, member of the Health Care Research group at Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) and nurse of the Crohn and the Ulcerative Colitis Unit at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, has been awarded with the best oral communication prize of the http://geteccu.org/v1-content/up/2013/06/7ReunionGETEII2.pdf 7th annual meeting of the Spanish nursing group of inflammatory bowel disease, hosted in Madrid on October 2nd.The awarded project, entitled "questions and needs of patients with inflammatory bowel disease that used the nursing telephone helpline", is a multicenter study led at Vall d'Hebron, with the participation of Hospital Mútua de Terrassa, Corporació Sanitària Universitària Parc Taulí, Hospital Clínic, Hospital del Mar and Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge.The study was carried out for 50 days in 2014. The hospitals received more than 1.200 calls from over 750 patients, which represented the 10% of the followed patients with these diseases. In conclusion, Ester Navarro says that "the nursing staff solved most of the calls by phone: they provided expert advice to the patients and avoided unnecessary hospital stays".The Spanish nursing group of inflammatory bowel disease recognized that this study followed the new paradigm of healthcare attention focused in the patient, in which the nursing staff is a key factor in the management of telephone helplines for patients.
