13/07/2015 VHIR collaborates with elementary schools and high schools to bring science closer to children and young students 13/07/2015 Children and teenagers explore biomedical investigation thanks to our researchers Our purpose at VHIR is for everyone to know what to "make science" is and the meaning of being a scientist. For this reason, our researchers have visited different schools and high scools to explain their work, they have also opened their laboratory's doors for children and young adults to visit them. Here we can see some examples: Little 3rd and 4th grade scientists make experiments together with VHIR's researchers:The Amor de Dios School prepared a laboratory room in the P4 classroom during the Science Week 2015. The "http://www.vhir.org/larecerca/grupsrecerca/ca_grups_equip.asp?area=4&grup=2&mh1=2&mh2=1&mh3=1&mv1=2&mv2=1&menu=3&Idioma=es" Paedriatics Neurology group from VHIR collaborated for the students to see which is the laboratory equipment used and they made an experiment in order to learn what antibiotics are useful for, the quantity of bacteria present in our skin and the importance of handwashing. Three groups were created: one "clean hands" group, one group whose members did not clean their hands and another one where the members had to run their hands over a plate with antibiotics in it. Later, all of three groups run their hands over a plate with culture medium for bacteria and, for the next days, children were able to watch which of the three groups had the most populated bacteria plates of all. 6th grade students at elementary school work the flu virus wirh Dr. Pumarola Dr. Pumarola, through the "http://www.recercaixa.cat/ca/index.html" RecerCaixa programme has helped 4 groups of 6th graders at elementary school to carry out work about the flu virus. Dr. Pumarola gave a talk at CosmoCaixa (which was, "https://ceipsantllorenc.wordpress.com/tag/tomas-pumarola/" according to the students, very interesting) and took them to visit the microbiology lab, where he is currently working. The students had to present a piece of work helped by their teachers and Dr. Pumarola himself, who answered any questions they may have.Dr. Pumarola explains during an "http://blog.educaixa.com/-/hacer-un-buen-trabajo-de-investigacion-requiere-ser-critico-y-estar-abierto-a-muchas-posibilidades" interview for the eduCaixa Blog that it has been a very rewarding experience, also that he is very proud of the students' work: "all the girls and boys have carried out very high-quality research works which could have perfectly corresponded to high school students". The Escolab programme invites students from Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), high school and vocational training to visit our Institute of Research. "http://escolab.bcn.cat/ca/home" Escolab is an initiative which aim is to discover the scientific adventure for 4th grade, high school and vocational training students and to show them the great potential of research in our centre. For this reason, students are allowed to go to various first-line research institutes and see how the leading researchers work to improve our daily life. VHIR is one of the institutes that "http://www.vhir.org/salapremsa/mitjans/mitjans_detall.asp?any=2013&num=22&mv1=5&mv2=1&Idioma=ca&titol=La%20classe%20de%20ci%E8ncies%20es%20trasl" has been opening its doors to students for the last years. In just a few hours, they have seen reality in biomedical research and they have left behind this scient-fiction feeling when seeing things like DNA sequencing machine, the confocal microscopy and laser microdissection system. 5 groups of students have visited the institute during this scholastic year. Also, apart from the visits that belong to the Escolab programme, the Department for Coordination among Laboratories organises other activities similar to these ones with the same purpose. About fifteen groups have visited us during the scholastic year. High school students carry out their Research project with the collaboration of VHIR's researchersFor those high school students who are interested in knowing what doing research is like, they are allowed to to their Research Project by experimenting in a fist-line lab. VHIR has been participating in this project since 2008 and, thanks to the collaboration of our researchers, 13 young students have been able to experience and carry out a research project focused on biomedical research at Vall D'Hebron. Other programsBesides from these programmes, the researchers have participated in other school-related initiaves, for instance, the "http://www.vhir.org/salapremsa/noticies/noticies_detall.asp?Idioma=ca&mv1=5&mv2=3&mh1=0&mh2=0&mh3=0&mh4=0&ms=0&any=2015&num=96" lecture course on Hepatitis, prepared by Dr. Josep Quer and Dr. Francisco Rodríguez-Frías for science teachers working at high schools (a course belonged to the "http://www.professorsiciencia.com/index.php?action=mostrar_curso&curso=102" Profesores y Ciencia de la Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera programme), or the "http://www.vhir.org/salapremsa/noticies/noticies_detall.asp?any=2015&num=44&mv1=5&mv2=3&Idioma=ca&titol=Els%20grups%20de%20Recerca%20Biom%E8dica" globalised work carried out by the students of Institut 4 Cantons together with researchers from the "http://www.vhir.org/larecerca/grupsrecerca/ca_grups_equip.asp?area=1&grup=2&mh1=2&mh2=1&mh3=1&mv1=2&mv2=1&menu=3&Idioma=es" group of Biomedical Research in Urology and Ginecology. Besides, "http://www.vhir.org/larecerca/grupsrecerca/ca_grups_equip.asp?area=1&grup=20&mh1=2&mh2=1&mh3=1&mv1=2&mv2=1&menu=3&Idioma=ca" researchers from the group of Translational Research in Child Cancer participated in the "http://cerca.cat/el-vhir-porta-la-investigacio-en-cancer-infantil-a-la-fira-recerca-en-directe-08042015/" Live Research Fair this year and taught the students some experiments being used to assess the effect of drugs. All these projects show the interest of VHIR's researchers for the children and young students to find out the meaning of doing research and to pique their curiosity for science. Maybe someday they will become leading researchers and they will never take the white coat off ever again. Twitter LinkedIn Facebook Whatsapp
