VHIR participates in a European clinical trial on Fanconi Anemia

The aim of the project is to find an effective treatment for this rare disease

Scientists of the Research Unit in Biomedicine and Translational and Pediatrics Oncology at VHIR participate in a European clinical trial to find an effective treatment against Fanconi Anemia. The project will receive near 7 million euros to test in 20 patients two new drugs that could correct the genetic defect of their stem cells in bone marrow.In a report published at ‘La Vanguardia’, Dr. Cristina Díaz from VHIR has explained that they work with the hypothesis that these drugs could cure patients, after demonstrating that the system works in the laboratory and with mice.During the following 5 years, the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Raras "http://www.ciberer.es/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1001&Itemid=62" (CIBERER) will coordinate this clinical trial in which participate 11 research groups from Spain, Germany, France and Britain.Nowadays, near 150 people suffer Fanconi Anemia in Spain.
