Scientists will show children and adults to count proteins and to measure the pH of the saliva after eating lemons

Do you have plans for this weekend? Come to Parc de la Ciutadella to the Festa de la Ciència i la Tecnologia to discover and experiment the excellence research and innovation done in Catalunya!Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) will have its own space inside the Catalan Association of Research Centers (ACER) area, located in front of the Parliament of Catalonia, with an inflatable tent where people of all ages may participate in two activities proposed by researchers of the Institute. Are you strong enough for lemons? See how the pH from your saliva changes! We have all heard of the neutral pH soaps for the skin, or have once said after eating an unripe orange that it has an acid flavor, but, do you know what pH is? Do you dare to measure yourself after eating a lemon or a lollipop? Thanks to the neutral pH of the saliva a kind of bacterium survive, but, what happen when we modify it?Doctors Maria Vicario and Cristina Frias from the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Digestive Tract group at VHIR have designed this activity that will take place on Saturday, from 11.30 am to 1.45 pm, and on Sunday, from 12 pm to 1.15 pm, and will count on the participation of researchers Eloísa Salvo Romero and Patricia Bogdanov.Look at the color and count proteins!Be up for counting proteins and discover all the applications for indentifying diseases! The origin of the protein word comes from Greek proteios, which means primary, the most important. As its name says, proteins are the molecules that make up the basic material of the human organism and the most plentiful in the cell. But, how many proteins can a biological sample have? Figure this out can be very useful for disease diagnostic.Dr. Susana Gómez from the Pneumolgy group at VHIR bring us this experiment that will make on Saturday, from 2 pm to 6 pm, and on Sunday, from 1.30 pm to 3 pm, the researchers Nuria Piedra, Thais Cornejo and Patricia Bogdanov.More than 100 centers of research, in a same spaceThe Festa de la Ciència i la Tecnologia, organized by the Institut de Cultura de l'Ajuntament de Barcelona, deals with four central concepts: 'By land, sea and sky', 'Trip to the present: we are all cyborgs!', 'Health, food and sport' and 'Smart cities', led by more than 100 catalan research institutions. Be up and come to enjoy the most innovative science and technology from Catalonia!
