The Institute is working to increase the percentage of women leading research groups, which is only the 13%.

Today, March 8, 2016, International Women's Day, about 70 percent of the staff of Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) are women. A very high percentage that is not reflected at the direction of research groups, where the majority of coordinators are men. To detect aspects that can stop careers of women in research and implement solutions, VHIR's board is preparing the second edition of the Equality Plan. Of the total of research groups coordinators at VHIR, only 13% are women. A percentage that increases in the category of Principal researchers, where women reach the 40 percent. Instead, the ratio of women in the board of VHIR's structure is very different, as 70% of them are women. VHIR has since 2011 an Equality Plan to ensure equal conditions and opportunities for women and men and to make gender equality one of the objectives of the Institute. For this reason, in recent years they have been carried out concrete actions, such as developing an ethical code of equal opportunities and communicate to all employees, and set meeting schedules having in consideration the reconciliation of work, personal life and family. Moreover, in 2014 VHIR signed the first collective agreement with the employees, which includes measures of family reconciliation, among others.
