Andrea Guala Andrea Guala obtained a bachelor and a master degree in mechanical engineering at Polytechnic of Milan and Turin, respectively, and, in 2015, a Ph.D. at the Polytechnic of Turin. In 2016 he joined the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) in Barcelona, where he was awarded (i) the Marie Curie COFUND post-doctoral fellowship (2016), (ii) the Juan de la Cierva (2019, 3rd best evaluated over 221 applicants), (iii) the Sara Borrell (2019, 4th best evaluated over +250 applicants), (iv) the “la Caixa” Junior Leader (2022), and (v) the R3 certification as “Established Researcher” from the Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation (100/100 evaluation). Andrea’s post-doctoral period officially ended in 2025, when, after the award of Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) tenure track call and the Miguel Servet contract, he obtained a permanent position as senior researcher at VHIR. Andrea now leads a team composed of 6 early career researchers and one post-doc, all mostly dedicated to medical image analysis, artificial intelligence and big data in cardiology and cardiovascular diseases. As per February 2026, Andrea authored 83 papers in peer-reviewed journals, being 1st author in 25 papers (31%), last author in 7 (9%) and corresponding author in 22 (27%).
